Our garments are all Global Organic Textile Standard and OKEO-TEX Standard 100 certified - the world leading standards for textiles made from organic fibres. This strict standard is applied from the moment the cotton is harvested until the garment is completed. It also applies to labelling and accessories on the clothing. The standard prohibits the use of toxic and non biodegradable chemicals, heavy metals and chlorine bleaching. All processes must be deemed to be environmentally sustainable.
Our factory is SA8000 certified. This means the factory complies with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Labour Organisation conventions. These rules protect workers from forced and child labour and ensure they have access to reasonable wages, work hours and health and safety practices.
Yes. Rowdy Roo is owned by me, Emily, and my sidekick (husband) Lendl. We both grew up in Queensland (me in the north and him in the south) and now live in Sydney. Our talented artist Penny lives in El Arish, Far North Queensland.
Believe me mate we TRIED. Did you know that not a single one of the 1500 Australian cotton farms produces an organic crop? According to Cotton Australia, the industry’s peak body, local growers believe it’s not economically viable to produce pesticide free cotton in Australia. “A small number of Australian cotton growers have experimented with organic cotton in the past, but it proved to be uneconomical to grow and has therefore inhibited it from entering long-term commercial production in Australia,” according to Cotton Australia. “Organic production typically requires more human labour, land and cost input than conventional cotton production (source: European Union, 2014 and ICAC, 2006).” Our garments are ethically made in India, the worlds largest producer of organic cotton. Our manufacturer was hand selected by Lendl's uncle. Uncle Ram was born and bred in India and he has spent his entire career working in the textiles industry. My little Aussie babes have Indian heritage and so there's no way we would allow Rowdy Roo to be manufactured somewhere which didn't comply to strict social standards.
